Study Tangent on Shekels of Silver

I listened to a great message about the book of Hosea this evening.  In Hosea 3:2, we learn that Hosea paid 15 shekels of silver to redeem his harlot wife, Gomer.  This reminded me that Joseph's brothers received 20 shekels when he was he was sold to the Midianite merchants. This spurred the thought that Judas received 30 shekels of silver for Christ.  Then I remembered that we had studied the cost of a servant in Leviticus 27:2-7.  Here's a little break down for you:
  • a male 20-60 years old = 50 shekels
  • a male 5-20 years old = 20 shekels
  • a male 1 month to 5 years old = 5 shekels
  • a female 20-60 years old = 30 shekels
  • a female 5-20 years old = 15 shekels
  • a female 1 month to 5 years old = 3 shekels

What does this all mean?
  • Gomer was under 20 years old, a mother of three and had sold herself into prostitution.  Her husband bought her back--redeemed her.
  • Joseph was under 20 years old when his brother's sold him to the merchants.
  • Christ's price was 30 shekels even though he was 33 years old when Judas betrayed Him.  Why? The price was for Christ's bride (the church) since Christ was not in need of redeeming. So, the "goodly price" given for Christ was 30 shekels.
FASCINATING!

Just Business

I haven't posted in awhile.  Girls, this is why I wasn't crazy about starting a blog. It's not a habit yet.  I'm sorry.

First things first, make sure you let Carol Edney know if you're planning to carpool to Kirstin Hager's house in Rogersville. We're meeting at the YMCA parking lot on Republic Rd at 9:30 a.m.  Don't forget.

If you have any recipes that you'd like to share for our cookbook please send them to me at hudson@cebridge.net.  You can send me scanned copies or typed copies.  Or you can just bring your recipes to Bible Study.
